How Do Transformers Help In Transmitting Electricity To End Users

Have you ever wondered how electricity is brought into our homes and offices? You know that it is superbly huge amount of power generated at the power stations, right? And, you also know that this huge supply if brought into your homes can cause serious damage to your appliances and death too. So then, how does this huge power get into your homes so safely? It is through a power system comprising of various step up and step down transformers. Step up transformers increase the voltage, while step down transformers decrease the voltage.

The power lines that you see criss-crossing across the country carry enormously high voltages of around 4,00,000 to 7,50,000 volts, delivering electricity from power plants to homes. But, our electronics and appliances use only a mere 110 to 250 volts of power. This huge difference in voltages is only made possible with the help of transformers. So, you can see what great a role transformers play to bring us safe electricity everyday! This is the reason the invention of transformers has proven to be a boon in the power industry because only after its invention has become possible the transmission of power and regulation of voltage.

What are step-up and step-down transformers?
Transformers work on a very simple principle that when fluctuating electric current flows through a wire, it generates a magnetic field all around it. The strength of magnetism is directly related to the size of the electric current. This means that bigger the current, stronger the magnetic field. Transformers have a soft iron core at the centre around which copper wire is wound. Transformers have one primary and one secondary coil wound around the core. If the primary coil has more turns than the secondary coil, the primary coil has higher voltage than the secondary. This is the functioning of a step-down transformer that reduces higher voltage to lower voltage. Reversing the situation, a step-up transformer can boost a low voltage into a higher one.

How do transformers help to bring in electricity to end users?
Now that you know what step up and step down transformers are, let us see how electricity is brought into our homes from the power station. Electricity is generated at power plants, which movies through a complex system known as the “grid”, comprising of electricity substations, transformers, and power lines. The various local grids are interconnected, forming larger networks that enhance the coordination and supply of electricity. There are hundreds of thousands of miles of high-voltage power lines and millions of miles of low-voltage power lines across the country that connect thousands of power plants to millions of residential and commercial areas for end users.

First, the power is generated in the utility power plant, which is supplied to the transmission towers through step-up transformers. The power then runs through high voltage transmission lines, travelling through step-down transformers to reach the substations. And then, finally, the power is then transformed to the homes, offices, and factories of end users through the utility poles that we see on the streets, having step-down transformers installed.

Apart from these transformers installed in the power grid system, you would also need various kinds of transformers installed within your homes and offices to bring in safe power supply for your electronic devices and appliances. For this, you can get in touch with Miracle Electronics to provide you with the best kinds of power, medical isolation, EI, UI, SMPS, audio output, three phase, and toroidaltransformers in India.
